National Surf Centre of Excellence - Strandhill Co Sligo

The National Surf Centre of Excellence situated in Strandhill, Co Sligo has been described as a flagship project for Sligo and the Northwest region. The facility was funded by Sligo County Council, Failte Ireland and the Department of Rural Community & Development and will be used by local, national & international surfers as well as local surf schools and advanced surfing trainers up to international level. The centre will provide a focal point in the village of Strandhill for both local businesses, residents & tourists and further promotes Strandhill and the entire Northwest region as a prime surfing destination internationally. The scope of works included the demolition of existing derelict buildings and site clearance works in the village centre site along the extremely popular promenade in Strandhill. The new development includes 4 Nr high specification changing rooms and shower areas, a retail space to compliment the surfers using the centre, office admin area, reception area and a very unique multi-purpose function space at first floor level with panoramic views across Sligo Bay to the north and the majestic Knocknarea mountain to the south. All of this is enclosed in a very eye catching building envelope consisting of a trocal roof & wall cladding system complete with standing seams simulating a surfers wetsuit draped over the striking precast concrete wall panels decorated with the distinct surfing & Irish mythology images designed by local artist and surfing legend, Barry Britton.

Client Testimonial
"Arken Construction were appointed as main contractor for the National Surf Centre of Excellence project in Strandhill, Co Sligo on behalf of Sligo County Council. The project entailed the construction of a unique newbuild comprising of reception area, changing rooms, shower areas, offices, retail unit, first floor multi-purpose function room and an outdoor covered space along with all associated drainage, services and site development works. The project commenced in July 2021 and achieved Substantial Completion in October 2022, on schedule, within budget and to a very high quality finish. As Client Representative / Project Manager for the project I found Arken Construction to be very professional, engaging, non-adversarial and a pleasure to work with. Led by James Armstrong and Stephen Clancy, the Arken Construction team were always proactive, committed and passionate on the delivery of excellence. Sligo County Council would have no reservation in recommending Arken Construction for similar projects and we look forward to working with them in the future."
